Nursing assistants, also known as nurse aides, certified nursing assistants, geriatric aides, unlicensed assistive personnel, orderlies or hospital attendants, provide hands-on care and perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff.
The Nursing Assistant - Limited Term program provides classroom, laboratory instruction and supervised practice in area nursing homes and hospitals. The program is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Office of Quality Assurance. After successfully completing this program, students will be eligible to complete the written and skills exams to be placed on the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry.
Nursing Assistant graduates will be able to:
- Communicate and interact effectively with clients, family, and co-workers
- Maintain and protect client rights
- Report information and record observations
- Demonstrate the ethical and legal responsibilities of the NA/HHA
- Provide safe care to a diverse population, meeting personal, physical and psychosocial client needs
- Assist with client rehabilitation and restorative care, promoting independence
- Assist clients with long-term, disabling conditions including dementia, always focusing on the strengths of the client
- Work cooperatively in a team environment
- Eligible to take the WI NA Competency evaluation

The CNA course is offered year round on all four campuses (Ashland, New Richmond, Rice Lake, Superior) and at the outreach centers in Ladysmith, Hayward, and Shell Lake. Take classes via web conferencing and hands-on labs.

Continue Your Education
As a CNA, it may be easier to gain access to other nursing programs, in particular accelerated ones. As you can demonstrate that you have working experience in the field, it will be more likely for you to be accepted to these programs.
Program specific subjects covered include infection control, transferring and range of motion. Hands-on learning will give you the experience to work in the field upon graduation.

After the Northwood Tech Nursing Assistant - Limited Term Program
Upon completion of the program, you will obtain a Nursing Assistant - Limited Term Technical Certificate and be eligible to complete the written and skills exam to be placed on the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry and become a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Professional Licensure and/or Certification Information
Northwood Tech’s Nursing Assistant program is designed to meet the State of Wisconsin’s licensing criteria. However, Northwood Tech has not made a determination whether this program meets licensure requirements in states other than Wisconsin. Students who may be seeking professional licensure or certification in states other than Wisconsin should contact the appropriate licensing board in that state to verify that the Northwood Tech program meets licensure or certification requirements.
Federal and state regulations require that a person's name is entered on the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry only after satisfactorily completing both a Wisconsin approved nurse aide training program, or basic nursing course for professional nurses or licensed practical nurses, and competency evaluation program.
