A Quick Reference for Students and Staff

Safety Statement

Northwood Technical College has an inherent responsibility to minimize danger to life, property and campus operations arising from emergency situations. Staff and students bear an obligation to conduct their tasks in a manner that does not endanger their health and well-being or the health and well-being of others. 

This quick reference is made available to all faculty, staff and students. Its purpose is to provide suggestions that will serve as reminders during times when decisions must be made quickly. 

General Rules

  • If requested, assist emergency crews.
  • Keep streets and walkways clear for emergency vehicles.
  • Disabled persons should be assisted in moving to shelter or evacuating from building. 
  • Do not visit emergency areas. This may hamper rescue and other emergency operations.

General Principles

When calling 911:
Tell the dispatcher your location - including building and room number. Answer all the dispatchers questions - do NOT hang up until told to do so. Follow all directions given by personnel. 

Bomb Threat

  • Listen to the caller and write down what you are told on the Bomb Threat Card
  • Do not panic
  • Immediately dial 911 after the caller hangs up and notify the Emergency Response Team by pressing the Alertus button
  • Remain available to talk with Law Enforcement
  • Do not talk to media or social media outlets

Evacuation

  • Evacuate via the nearest stairwell to door
  • Do not prop open doors
  • Do not use elevators
  • Move to a safe area away from the building
  • Individuals who are unable to evacuate may report to an area of rescue assistance
  • Do not return to the building until after receiving the "all clear" notification

Tornado Warning

  • Notification of the warning will be issued through the RAVE and Alertus mass notification system
  • Immediately move to a designated tornado-safe area
  • Stay close to interior walls, away from windows
  • Stay in the tornado-safe area until an "all clear" has been issued

Shelter In Place

  • Notification of Shelter In Place will be issued through the RAVE and Alertus mass notification system
  • Remain in the campus building as directed
  • See your email for more information
  • Do not leave the building until receiving the "all clear" notification

Active Threat

  • Follow instructions proved in the RAVE notification
  • If possible, call 911
  • Evacuate if possible
  • Shelter if necessary
  • Act if you must
  • Respond appropriately when law enforcement arrives
  • Remain calm and follow officers' instructions

Medical Emergency

  • Dial 911
  • Press the nearest Alertus button to notify the Emergency Response Team
  • Assign an escort to meet emergency personnel at the nearest entrance
  • Employees are not authorized to transport any injured or ill individual
  • Stay with the individual until emergency personnel arrive
  • Complete an incident report

When to call 911: Call 911 in all emergencies
What is an emergency? 
An emergency is any immediate threat to life and/or property that requires immediate response from police officers, firefighters or other emergency personnel. If you are not sure if an incident falls into an emergency, call 911 when an immediate response is needed.
