Medical laboratory technicians work behind-the-scenes to perform medical laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Medical laboratory technicians use a variety of technology, instrumentation, and manual procedures to collect, process, and analyze biological specimens.

Program Overview

At career entry, the medical laboratory technician will be able to collect, process, and analyze blood and body fluids by performing routine clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and urinalysis. Medical laboratory technicians are highly specialized healthcare professionals that use state-of-the-art equipment to provide laboratory test results to physicians that aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. As an essential member of the healthcare team, Medical laboratory technicians work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and research laboratories.

Program Outcomes

Medical Laboratory Technician graduates will be able to:

  • Collect and process biological specimens
  • Monitor and evaluate quality control in the laboratory
  • Apply modern clinical methodologies including problem solving and troubleshooting according to predetermined criteria
  • Correlate laboratory results to diagnosis of clinical conditions and/or diseases
  • Perform information processing in the clinical laboratory
  • Model professional behaviors, ethics, and appearance

Academics

Medical Laboratory Technician is a two-year program at the New Richmond campus. Students have the option to complete some general education coursework in the summer between their first and second year.

Topics in this course include pathophysiology and methodologies for carbohydrate, lipids, proteins, renal function and blood gas analysis. Additional topics include hepatic, cardiac markers, tumor markers, endocrine function, miscellaneous body fluids, toxicology, enzymes and electrolytes. Graduates may be eligible to take a national certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathologists’ (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).
