Biography
I received my MSN in nursing education which allows me to apply very specific principles of teaching and learning to students. I believe that I recognize and adapt different student demographics due to my MSN education.
Most of my work experience has been in long term care and home care. I have worked in direct patient care as well as management and administration. Teaching students about basic care and human needs as well as how best to care for patients is the focal point of 1st year nursing.
The career opportunities that are open to students are infinite. Nursing can be direct patient care, or it can be starting your own entrepreneurial practice providing coaching services for healthy lifestyle choices. There is no limit to what you can do when you become a nurse.
New and emerging technologies that have recently become incorporated into the program curriculum are high fidelity simulation at the Shell Lake simulation center. This includes five simulation mannequins that can offer real-life experiences to students in a safe environment.
My teaching philosophy centers around Knowles' Adult Learning Theory. This incorporates using previous knowledge that the student already has experienced to apply this to how they will learn. Knowles' Adult Learning Theory also uses storytelling in lecture and other teaching principles to enhance engagement.
Being a nurse is being a teacher. What I love about teaching is the ability to impart my knowledge on others and learning from my students as well.
In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors with my family. We love spending time on Lake Superior and camping whenever we get the chance.
