Northwood Tech Diversity Award recipient: Sally Dittloff, Psychology Instructor
Year received the award: 2017
Reason for the receiving the award: Sally was selected for the award because of her work with the LGBT and Mentorship Clubs. In addition, she coordinates the Rice Lake Community Forums where she has brought in speakers who address social issues that continue to be of importance on our campus. Sally continues to be a strong advocate and support system to those who know they can completely trust her.
Significance of the piece to the award recipient: When considering the meaning of diversity, I tapped into my personal experience of caring for a parent suffering from dementia. People with dementia come in all shapes and sizes. The heartbreaking impact of this illness, for both the individual and his or her loved ones, does not discriminate. As my father and I take this journey together, I constantly look for sources of inspiration and ways to make a difference. One of the outcomes of my search was finding “Molly’s Movement’ https://mollysmovement.com/”
Molly’s Movement focuses on fundraising to raise awareness of the illness, and providing support for caregivers. In the words of Joey Daley, Molly’s son: “This painting is called "A Night Out". Going out to restaurants with family and friends has always been Molly's favorite thing to do.
Molly painted this picture back in 1989 when she was healthy. With each reprint painting sold we will send a Caregiver or someone with Dementia out for a nice dinner and a relaxing Movie paid for by Molly's Movement. When displaying this painting by Molly may it always be a reminder of the struggles you go through in life but to always "Keep Moving Forward".”
