Le Couloir de l’Opera

Diversity Art Winner - WITC-Rice Lake Campus

Title: La Couloir de l’Opera

Artist: Jean Beraud (1849-1935)

Artist background: Béraud was a French painter, though born in St. Petersburg, Russia. He depicted la vie de Paris and the nightlife of Parisian society during La Bell Epoque, as did his peers Manet and Degas. His style became a classic and stands somewhere between academic art of the Salon and that of the Impressionists. He exhibited his watercolors in the 1889 Paris World’s Fair and received the Légion d’honneur in 1894.

Northwood Tech Diversity Award recipient: Lynette Emanuel, Communications Instructor

Year received the award: 2002-03

Reason for the receiving the award: Lynette was nominated and selected for incorporating multicultural experiences and love of languages, history, art, music, and dance from studies and travel at home and abroad into the courses she taught. Her coordination of numerous cultural presentations to the Northwood Tech campus facilitated a more diverse learning environment.

Significance of the piece to the award recipient: Lynette had recently returned from a trip overseas where she saw her first opera house. Amazed by the architecture of the building, her experience inspired her to select this particular painting. She said, “The old opera house is my favorite edifice in Paris. Béraud’s paintings take me back to the City of Light and my studies in Europe.”
