Governor Evers honors Northwood Technical College with 2023 Vets Ready Employer Award

November 21, 2023

The 2023 Vets Ready Employer Award honors employers like Northwood Tech for their exemplary commitment to hiring and supporting veterans.

11/21/2023 – Northwood Technical College was recently named by Gov. Tony Evers as one of 17 employers chosen for the 2023 Vets Ready Employer Initiative award. Northwood Tech’s award was listed as Silver Certification for a business designated in the small category and will be conferred at events this year in Milwaukee and Oshkosh. The award recognizes Northwood Tech as a Wisconsin employer that has gone above and beyond for the veteran workforce with efforts to build a dedicated support system within the College’s workplace, by actively seeking and retaining veterans, and establishing meaningful connections with veterans in the local community and their families.

“Our nation’s heroes have given so much in service to our country and often face unique obstacles when they return home, including in finding family-supporting employment,” said Gov. Evers. “Veterans bring invaluable and tremendous assets to the workplace, and I commend these Vets Ready employers for their work to hire and support veterans. This distinction will help elevate the work of these employers and give them the competitive edge in recruiting and retaining veterans.”

In response to the College’s award, Northwood Tech President Dr. John Will stated, “We recognize the service and sacrifice of all veterans and appreciate the recognition of our efforts to ensure that we are creating a supportive work environment for them.”

I'm proud to work for Northwood Tech, where we go above and beyond just saying thank you for your service. It's important to us that our military-connected employees feel supported, and as a service member myself, I can say that we're meeting our goals,” said Stephanie Smith, current member of the National Guard and veteran student advocate/non-traditional occupation grant coordinator for Northwood Tech.

Annually, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) and its Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) commend Wisconsin businesses with outstanding commitment to veteran employment with either a gold or silver certification and are granted within one of three categories: small, medium, and large businesses. Key partners involved in this award program include the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Wisconsin Department of Disabled American Veterans, and the Wisconsin Veterans Chamber of Commerce.

“Employers that demonstrate exemplary support for the veteran community have a winning formula for success for their business and for the community,” said DWD Secretary Amy Pechacek. “We are proud to honor these employers through the Vets Ready Employer Initiative.”
